The New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell who's shot his best round on the European Tour in six years, says he hasn't lost any of the mental toughness he possessed when he was at the top of his game.

Campbell who won the US Open in 2005 but has struggled for form until recently, has claimed the outright lead at the halfway stage of the Hong Kong Open after firing a six under par 64 in round two, putting him one shot clear of the rest of the field.

Campbell was third in the Portugal Masters a month ago, his best result in years and says he never lost the tough mental edge needed to win.

Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, China's Zhang Lianwei and the Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed were tied in second, a shot behind, with most of the second round completed at Hong Kong Golf Club.
