The defending champions Manchester City have gone to the top of English football's Premier League for the first time this season with a crushing 5-0 win over Aston Villa.

West Bromwich Albion have shown they're a legitimate Premier League force by beating European champions Chelsea 2-1 at home at the Hawthorns.

Manchester United couldn't reclaim the lead when they lost 1-0 at Norwich City.

Arsenal kickstarted their season by beating north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 after Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor had been sent off shortly after giving his side the lead.

Southampton beat fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers 3-1 to put QPR manager Mark Hughes' job in danger - the home defeat left Hughes's team as the only team in England's four professional divisions without a win this season.

Liverpool beat Wigan Athletic 3-0 and Swansea City enjoyed a 2-1 win over Newcastle, while Reading upset Everton 2-1.
