A rising star on the men's tennis tour has been confirmed to play in January's Heineken Open in Auckland.

The Slovakian Martin Klizan, who earlier this month reached a career high world ranking of 29 and was awarded ATP newcomer of the year, will start 2013 in New Zealand.

The 23-year-old's biggest scalp this year was a US Open victory over world No.8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, while in September he won his first ATP title in St Petersburg, Russia.

The defending champion and world No.5 David Ferrer is the top seed for the Heineken Open and he will be attempting to win his third consecutive title.

The full field of 20 players will be announced on Wednesday.
