Man U stay on top

The Dutch striker Robin van Persie scored the fastest goal of the English Premier League football season - timed at 31 seconds - to keep leaders Manchester United a point clear at the summit after a 1-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford.

Manchester City remain second after a 2-0 victory at Wigan Athletic.

Boos rang out again at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea managed their second goalless draw since new manager Rafael Benitez took over, the Blues drawing 0-0 with London rivals Fulham this time.

Chelsea still leapfrogged West Bromwich Albion into third place on goal difference - seven points behind United - after Albion were beaten 3-1 at Swansea City.

Tottenham Hotspur moved up to fifth by beating Liverpool 2-1 at White Hart Lane, rising above Everton and Arsenal who drew 1-1 at Goodison Park.

Stoke City came from a goal down at home to inflict a fourth consecutive league defeat on Newcastle United, winning 2-1, while Southampton remain in the bottom three after a 1-1 draw at home to Norwich City.
