Tom Watson laments demise of q-school

The American golf legend Tom Watson says the abolition of the annual Qualifying School in America from next season is robbing young players of their "dream".

The last 6-round survival test finished yesterday in California, with New Zealand's Danny Lee failing by just one shot to earn a place on the 2013 PGA tour.

But from next year the only avenue for promotion to the world's richest tour will be via the top 25 money winners on the second-tier Web.com Tour in the States.

Watson, who's playing in this week's Australian Open, believes the new system reduces the opportunities for foreign players to qualify for the PGA tour.

The winner of 8 major championships also believes golf has no place in the Olympics.
