City to be involved in history

8:21 am on 6 December 2012

Auckland City FC will be involved in football history tonight as new goal-line technology gets its first official hit out in a FIFA tournament.

City play Japanese champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Yokohama for a place in the elite FIFA Club World Cup and it'll be the first outing for two pieces of technology to monitor whether a ball has crossed the goal-line.

The Hawk-eye technology widely used in cricket and tennis, and GoalRef, which uses a microchip in the ball and low magnetic waves around the goal, will be used at venues in Toyota and Yokohama.

The move to bring football into the 21st century finally was prompted by England midfielder's Frank Lampard's disallowed goal against Germany at the 2010 World Cup - and just last weekend another goal that should have been allowed was ruled out in the Premier League.
