A year after being dropped, batsman Phil Hughes has been recalled to the Australian side for the first test against Sri Lanka.

Hughes has taken the batting spot vacated by retired great Ricky Ponting for the first test against the Sri Lankans starting next week in Hobart.

The Australian chairman of selectors John Inverarity says the batting order for the Test would be decided by captain Michael Clarke, with Hughes slotting in at first-drop an option.

Pace bowlers Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus return to the squad after being rested for the third test against South Africa in Perth.

Left-armers Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc retain their places.
