Smith pipped in gold medal match, McIlroy wins bronze

Updated at 7:14 pm on 9 December 2012

The Nelson lawn bowler Val Smith has been unable to defend her women's singles title at the world championships in Adelaide.

Smith has to settle for the silver medal after losing 21-17 to Australia's Karen Murphy in the final.

Earlier, Shannon McIlroy narrowly lost a gripping semi-final in the men's singles, going down 21-19 to the Australian world number two Leif Selby.

But McIlroy's defeat still earns him the bronze medal.
