Waitakere United and Canterbury United extended their lead at the top of the ASB Premiership football table with wins over Hawke's Bay and YoungHeart Manawatu after the latest round.

Waitakere United's 3-1 win over 10-man Hawke's Bay United kept the West Aucklanders top, while Canterbury United are within a single point of the league leaders.

Canterbury overcame a stubborn Manawatu to make it five wins from their last five games when they beat them 2-0 in Palmerston North.

Otago United ended its 14-match winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Team Wellington in the match at the Stadium, to climb off the bottom of the table but in winning created a log jam with only three points separating the bottom four teams.

Next week Auckland City, with two matches in hand on the rest of the field because of their FIFA Club World Cup exploits in Japan, restart their campaign at home to YoungHeart Manawatu.

Northern booked their place in the ASB women's league grand final with a hard-fought 2-0 semi-final victory over a determined Capital side at Fred Taylor Park in Whenuapai.

Defending champions Northern will play Auckland in Sunday's final at Fred Taylor Park, after Auckland beat Mainland 3-1 in extra time in Christchurch.
