The Sri Lanka cricket captain Mahela Jayawardene has confirmed he'll step down from the role after the tour of Australia.

Jayawardene, who's 35, led Sri Lanka to the one day World Cup final in 2007 and agreed to take over the captaincy for a second spell earlier this year in place of opener Tillakaratne Dilshan.

He has endorsed 25-year-old vice-captain Angelo Mathews as his successor.
