Entries for National Open bowls championships slightly up

The Chief Executive of Bowls New Zealand says while the national competition will be reviewed annually, its current format and timing is still favoured.

The near two-week National Open championships has begun in Taranaki with Kerry Clark saying the fields are slightly ahead, numberwise, across all disciplines compared to Auckland 12 months ago.

Clark says entries are nothing like they used to be but it's a sign of the times, with work committments continuing to erode participation.

This year's championship features the appearance of 1988 world pairs champions Rowan Brassey and Peter Bellis, but not as a combination in any discipline.
