Commentary doyen Richie Benaud and former Prime Minister John Howard have led the tributes for former England cricket captain Tony Greig.

Greig died Saturday after suffering a heart attack following a short battle with lung cancer.

Benaud, the former Australian captain and Greig's fellow commentator, recalled Greig's will to win as his defining characteristic.

Benaud says when Greig played cricket he would just get in there and fight.

Howard says he loved Greig's spirit.

He says in the commentary box, as a former English captain, Greig would always have a bit of a jab at the Australians.

Australian test captain Michael Clarke says the news was devastating for the test team.

Clarke says Greig has been a great mentor for him, providing great advice, through the good times and the bad.
