Last year's semi-finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova has been knocked out in the first round of Auckland's ASB women's tennis Classic.

The Russian two-time grand slam winner won the first set in a tiebreak over Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, but lost the second then was broken on her own serve to lose the last set and the match, 7-6 2-6 5-7.

Earlier on a windy opening day, France's Pauline Parmentier beat the American seventh seed Christina McHale 6-4 6-1, while the Russian Elena Vesnina defeated wildcard Eugenie Bouchard, an 18-year-old Canadian, 7-5 6-3.

The former champion Greta Arn lost her final qualifying match in three sets to the Thai player Nudnida Luangnam - but Arn still made the main draw as a lucky loser and will face the top seed Agnieszka Radwanska tomorrow afternoon.

New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, who's in action in the doubles tonight, will face Canada's Stephanie Dubois in the first round of the singles.

Second-seeded German Julia Georges plays Latvian qualifier Anastasija Sevastova.
