New Zealand lose first test by innings and 27 runs

The New Zealand cricketers have lost the first test against South Africa by an innings and 27 runs in Cape Town.

On the third day Dean Brownlie hit a maiden test century for New Zealand but the Black Caps were bowled out for 275 in their second innings at Newlands.

The tourists made the South Africans toil almost until tea as they recovered some pride after a first innings of 45 all out.

Brownlie made 109 before falling to the second new ball four minutes before lunch.

New Zealand lost their last six wickets for 46 runs.

Proteas fast bowler Vernon Philander won the man-of-the-match award for his match figures of 7-83, which included five for seven in the first innings.

The second and final test starts in Port Elizabeth next Wednesday..
