Phoenix captain wants to be an All White

The Wellington Phoenix football captain, Australian Andrew Durante, wants to play for the All Whites.

Durante, who's been with the club for five years, is seeking New Zealand citizenship and once that's granted will seek clearance from football's world governing body FIFA to switch allegiances.

Durante hopes to be eligible for the All Whites for the next round of World Cup qualifying matches in March.

The Sydney-born Durante hasn't represented Australia at any level, although he did make the Socceroos squad in 2010 but never took the field.

Durante's only made the decision to pursue an All Whites career in the past month, saying he's had lengthy talks with New Zealand Football chairman Frank Van Hattum in the past few weeks.

He says coach Ricki Herbert is keen for him to become eligible and other All Whites and Phoenix players are supportive of his move.
