Big day of upsets at sevens

6:18 am on 2 February 2013

On a day of upsets, hosts and defending champions New Zealand managed to recover to make the quarter-finals of the Wellington leg of the IRB rugby sevens, however second and third ranked France and Fiji were both knocked out of the Cup.

New Zealand lost to England, but then beat Spain and the United States to finish second in the group and will now meet Australia in the quarter-finals, while England will play Scotland.

France finished third in their group behind Kenya and Argentina, while Fiji lost to Australia and Scotland.

It is the first time in the 14-year history of the series that Fiji has failed to make the quarter-finals.

In today's other quarter-finals Kenya play South Africa and Samoa play Argentina.
