The All Whites defender Tommy Smith has scored twice for Ipswich Town in their 4-0 home rout of sixth placed Middlesbrough in the English football Championship.

The victory moves Ipswich further out of danger up to 17th - five points above the relegation zone, with 15 matches left in their season.

Cardiff City remain firmly on course for promotion up a division to the Premier League with a 1-0 away win over Leeds at Elland Road.

That gave the Wesh side a 10-point lead over both second-placed Leicester and third-placed Hull, who won their game in hand at Millwall to remain level on points with the Foxes in the race for automatic promotion.

Gianfranco Zola's Watford came from a goal down to beat Bolton 2-1 and move within touching distance of the automatic promotion places in fourth place, just one point behind Leicester and Hull.

Crystal Palace, in fifth place, are also in the hunt for a top-two finish after beating south London rivals Charlton 2-1.

Chris Burke scored twice as Birmingham recorded a much-needed 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

Blackpool suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Barnsley, while Derby beat Huddersfield 3-0.

There was no respite for struggling Bristol City as Jordan Rhodes scored a goal in each half for Blackburn in a 2-0 win at Ewood Park.

Burnley denied basement side Peterborough a victory as the two sides drew 2-2 at London Road, while Sheffield Wednesday moved away from the bottom with a 3-1 win over 10-man Brighton at Hillsborough.
