Canada has reached its first ever Davis Cup quarter-final by beating a Spanish tennis side sorely missing stars like Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer.

Milos Raonic fired 22 aces in beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-4 6-2 to give Canada an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the Davis Cup first-round tie.

Raonic and Frank Dancevic won opening singles matches on Friday to put the Canadians on the brink but Spain stayed in the hunt to the final day with a doubles victory on Saturday.

The Spanish captain Alex Corretja replaced Marcel Granollers, who played in both of the first two days, with Davis Cup debutante Garcia-Lopez but the move failed to pay off.

Canada will play Italy in April.
