The Springbok flanker Juan Smith has retired days after injuring himself in a comeback game ahead of the new Super rugby season.

The 31-year-old Cheetahs loose forward returned last weekend from a two year break folllowing an Achilles tendon injury which involved four operations, but he aggravated the injury and has decided to quit the game.

Smith won 69 caps and was part of South Africa's World Cup-winning team in 2007.
