Wrestling chief resigns following IOC snub

Raphael Martinetti resigned as president of the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles after he was largely held to blame for the sport losing its spot at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Martinetti's position became untenable when to many people's surprise the 15-man International Olympic Committee's Executive Board voted it off the programme last week.

FILA vice president Tomiaki Fukuda says the governing body will continue to review wrestling's plight during the annual gathering being held in Phuket.

Part of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and all further editions of the Games, wrestling was stunned when the IOC Executive Board made a surprise recommendation on Wednesday to drop the sport from the 2020 Games.

The sport will now join seven other candidate sports battling for one spot in a revamped programme when the IOC session in Buenos Aires votes on the recommendation in September.
