Wellington pro disqualified from Vic Open

The Victorian Golf Open was turned upside down yesterday when the Wellington professional Nick Gillespie was sensationally disqualified.

The 24 year old third year professional was elated after a course record-equalling 65 which had given him a two shot lead, but he forgot to sign his card, which meant automatic disqualification.

Initially distraught, Gillespie said after coming down he'd been practicing his signature in preparation for next week's New Zealand PGA championship.

Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington was the last big name to be disqualified for failing to sign his scorecard, in 2011.

Josh Geary's the leading New Zealander, tied for third one stroke from the lead.
