The New Zealand cricketers are yet to lose a wicket late on the second day of the first test against England in Dunedin.

A short time ago at drinks, the Black Caps were 45 without loss in their first innings, after bowling the English out for 167 before tea.

Otago debutant Hamish Rutherford is on 30 while fellow opener Peter Fulton is on 14.

James Anderson was the last wicket to fall, the paceman becoming Black Caps spinner Bruce Martin's fourth wicket on debut for 23. Monty Panesar was one not out.

Neil Wagner claimed his fourth wicket after lunch, removing fellow fast bowler Steve Finn for 20, while Martin claimed Matt Prior for 23, Jonathan Trott for 45 and Stuart Broad for 10.

At lunch England were 81 for five, with Nick Compton dismissed for no score, Alistair Cook for 10, Kevin Pietersen a golden duck, Ian Bell 24 and Joe Root four, with Tim Southee taking one wicket and Trent Boult one.

No play was possible on Wednesday, but there are blue skies above the University Oval today and no sign of any rain.
