The New Zealand cricket captain Brendon McCullum says they have taken a step forward in improving their Test game after the first Test against England ended in a draw.

100 overs were lost because of the weather in Dunedin with play finishing early on the final day with England 421 for 6 in their second innings, a lead of 128 runs.

McCullum says they know the public's crying out for the Test game to improve, and this is a big step for them to look at where they were after the South African tour and where they are now.

He says they've shown themselves and also the fans that they're capable of achieving against good teams too.

McCullum says the challenge now is to back it up in the next two Tests starting with the Basin Reserve match on Thursday.

Meanwhile the England captain Alastair Cook has revealed there is some worry over Kevin Pietersen's right knee which forced him to spend time off the field in Dunedin, however he's confident he'll be able to play in Wellington.
