Chiefs better than Kings

11:44 am on 16 March 2013

The defending Super Rugby Champions the Chiefs have beaten the Southern Kings 35-24 in Port Elizabeth.

While happy with the five-point victory for co-captain Liam Messam's 100th Super Rugby game, the Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says the margin should not have been so close.

The Chiefs were leading 18-6 just before the break when a handling error allowed the Kings winger Sergeal Petersen to score a run away try closing the half out at 18-13.

Lelia Masanga completed his hat-trick early in the second half and Sam Cane also crossed the line for the Chiefs, but the champions then seemed to lose their concentration allowing the Kings back into the game.

Rennie says the former All Black Ross Filipo who was playing his first game for the Chiefs has sufferd a bad knee injury and could be out for the rest of the season.
