New All Whites captain wants to lead by example

The new All Whites captain Winston Reid says he'll bring his own style to the role.

Reid was on Wednesday named the new skipper of the New Zealand football team ahead of Friday night's World Cup qualifier against New Caledonia in Dunedin.

The 24-year-old West Ham United defender will don the armband for the first time in his 15th international, having captained his club side in both the English Premier League and FA Cup in recent weeks.

His appointment follows the retirement of Ryan Nelsen in February and Reid says while he's got big boots to fill he's comfortable being a leader.

Reid says working hard and being a good role model are qualities he wants to bring to the role.

Tommy Smith, who led the side last year when Nelsen and Reid weren't available, has been named vice captain.
