But the Black Caps have claimed two wickets late on the second day to have England reeling again on 50 for two at stumps, 393 runs behind in their first innings.
Bowler Trent Boult snared captain Alistair Cook nicking one behind for just four, then Jonathan Trott went lbw, also to Boult, for 27.
New Zealand's first innings came to an abrupt end, with England bowler Steven Finn taking the final two wickets in consecutive balls after tea on day two of the decisive third cricket test at Auckland's Eden Park.
BJ Watling was ruled caught out on appeal for 21 then Boult caught out next ball for a golden duck, leaving fellow bowler Neil Wagner stranded on two not out.
Finn was the pick of the English attack with six wickets for 125.
Resuming on 250 for one, three wickets fell in the morning with the centurion Peter Fulton out for 136, Kane Williamson 91 and Ross Taylor 19 as the Black Caps reached lunch at 312 for four.
Dean Brownlie fell for 36 to join his captain Brendon McCullum back in the stands, McCullum gone for 38 as two wickets fell after lunch and the hosts went to tea at 414 for six.
England dismissed Bruce Martin for 10 and Tim Southee went for a quickfire and important 44 before Watling and Boult completed the dismissals.
