Russia has begun stockpiling snow to ensure the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi isn't affected by unpredictable weather conditions.

The Sochi 2014 Olympics Organising Committee has constructed a huge snow storage facility to hold 450 thousand cubic metres of snow before mid-April when the thaw sets in to prevent any shortages at the outdoor Olympic venues in case of unfavourable weather conditions next February.

The snow reserves will be covered by a 40-centimetre layer of specially processed sawdust to conserve it.
