Paston calls it a day

12:39 pm on 1 April 2013

The Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Mark Paston announced his professional retirement ahead of the local A-League football club's final game of their season against the Melbourne Victory in the capital.

The 36-year-old told team-mates of his decision to retire at training on Saturday but Paston's keeping the door open to a World Cup swansong with the All Whites.

However he says he has to talk to a few people in New Zealand Football about whether it's a realistic option, and he'll have to find a club to play for.

Paston says he won't bother if he's not up to it, and his body told him it was time to retire from the professional game.

He's moving into a career in IT.
