Phoenix claim wooden spoon

The Wellington Phoenix has finished the season on the bottom of the A-league ladder.

The Phoenix blew its chance to avoid the wooden spoon by failing to beat or draw with the Melbourne Victory in Wellington today, the Phoenix lost the match 3-2.

The All White Marco Rojas scored for the Victory early in the first half, followed by a successful strike from Marcos Flores early in the second.

In reply, the Phoenix's Belgian striker Stein Huysegems netted in the 65th minute followed a minute later by a goal from Jeremy Brockie, his 16th of the season.

The match appeared to be heading for a draw until a clever free kick from the Victory helped Archie Thompson net the winner with six minutes left on the clock.

Perth Glory edged Sydney FC for the last place in the A-League football finals with a 1-1 draw against Adelaide United at nib Stadium on Saturday night.
