Four New Zealanders have been beaten on the first day of the Australian Badminton Open in Sydney.

In the first round of singles, the top ranked New Zealander Joe Wu was beaten in straight games by Malaysian Yogendran Krishnan.

Recently crowned New Zealand domestic champion Michael Fowke of Waikato lost to Australian Luke Chong in straight games and Thomas Ellis fell to world number 64 Zulfadli Zulkiffli of Malaysia, also in straight games.

Former New Zealand junior rep Chance Cheng won through qualifying but was eventually beaten in the first round by Thai opponent Adulrach Namkul.

A total of 12 New Zealand players are taking part in the Australian tournament in all five draws.

The Australian Open is being used as a build up by many competitors for next week's New Zealand Open at the North Shore Events Centre.
