Kolkata start defence of IPL title with a win

The defending champion Kolkata Knight Riders have opened the new Indian Premier League season with a six-wicket victory over the Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens.

Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum didn't play for Kolkata as he's still in New Zealand recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in the last test against England.

Delhi is the team Jesse Ryder was to play for before being assualted in Christchurch.

Elsewhere, an unbeaten 92 from West Indian Chris Gayle helped the Royal Challengers Bangalore to a two-run victory over the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 match in Bangalore.

Gayle's innings came off 58 balls and included 11 fours and 5 sixes.

Bowling for Mumbai Jacob Oram took none for 22 from his 4 overs.

Mumbai finished five down in their chase for 157.
