The German triathlete Anne Haug has won the women's race at the season-opening World Cup event in Auckland, repeating her success from last year's triathlon World Series Grand Final on the same course.

New Zealand Olympian Kate McIlroy led late on in the women's race, but the German Haug sprinted away from their breakaway group of four to win, with McIlroy fading to fourth.

Nicky Samuels was fifth after joining McIlroy in the lead group out of the swim and Samuels was first off the bike before fading on the run.

National No.1 Andrea Hewitt was a disappointing 15th after a disastrous swim, the world No.3 from Christchurch coming out of the water in 22nd.

Hewitt's blaming a bike accident earlier in the week resulting in what she says her doctor told was concussion for her poor result.
