Australia's traditional powerhouse Olympic sport of swimming has been hit with a half-million-dollar funding cut in the wake of a poor London Games campaign.

The Australian Sports Commission announced its 2013-14 funding allocation and the other showcase Olympic sport of athletics also had its funding docked by 3.8 percent.

Despite a cut of 5.8 percent, swimming remains the best individually funded sport at nearly $10 million NZ dollars.

Sailing's three gold medals in London was rewarded with a 16.7 percent increase.

Other sports to earn big cash increases were canoeing, rowing, rugby sevens and golf.
