Warburton about to be named Lions captain

6:02 am on 29 April 2013

London's Telegraph newspaper is reporting that Sam Warburton is about to be named captain of the British and Irish Lions for their Australian tour, leading a squad that will contain at least 15 Welshmen.

Warburton has captained Wales successfully under head coach Warren Gatland and it appears he's been preferred to Ireland's Paul O'Connell, who led the Lions to South Africa in 2009.

The last Welshman to captain the Lions was Phil Bennett in 1977.

The touring party of up to 37 players will be officially named tonight.
