The New Zealand equestrian rider Andrew Nicholson says he expected his horse Quimbo to be able to win the Kentucky Three Day event with a clear showjumping round.

Nicholson's now in line to become the first New Zealander to win the Grand Slam of eventing having already won Burghley but needing to win Badminton this weekend.

Nicholson and Quimbo went into the final showjumping round in first place having performed well in the cross country phase, which Nicholson says was the most pleasing aspect as it's not Quimbo's forte.

He says Quimbo's bred from showjumping stock so expected him to perform well.

Nicholson also finished third on his other horse Calico Joe.
