History made as first active player comes out in US

Players, administrators and some politicians have applauded the veteran NBA basketball centre Jason Collins for coming out.

Collins became the first active player from any of the US professional sports leagues to publicly reveal he's gay - and the likes of Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Bill Clinton have backed his taboo-breaking stand.

Some have even hailed it as a landmark day in American civil rights, as important as when Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier in baseball.
