Townsville may survive

The group trying to save the Townsville Australian National Basketball League club are quietly confident the Crocs will participate next season.

Three weeks ago, club owners Barrier Reef Basketball Ltd wanted to hand their licence back to the NBL after losing more than $3 million in the past six years.

Basketball Australia refused to immediately accept the returned licence saying the owners had not complied with the terms of the NBL licence agreement, which would require them to demonstrate they were insolvent.

The NBL faced the prospect of being reduced to an all-time low of seven clubs if Townsville folded.

However, a group called Save the Crocs has been drumming up support to keep the club going and has received $1.5 million from an anonymous backer.

In addition they have been pledged almost $500,000 from people around Australia and are over halfway to meeting their membership target.
