Andrew Nicholson is sitting third after day one of the dressage at the Badminton horse trials, as the New Zealand rider bids for eventing's grand slam.

Nicholson had 45 penalty points on Averbury and is expecting to do better on his other mount Nereo.

Two Australians hold the top two places heading into the second day, with Christopher Burton in first place on Holstein Park Leilani and Sam Griffiths sitting second on Happy Times.

It was a day to forget for defending champion Sir Mark Todd - the New Zealand veteran's second to last.
