The defending champion Roger Federer has become the second major casualty at the Madrid Open.

In his first tennis tournament since March, the Swiss second seed has been upset in the third round by the Japanese Kei Nishikori who won the match 6-4 1-6 6-2.

Federer's early exit follows the shock loss two days ago of the world number one Novak Djokovic to the rising Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov.

It's 23-year-old Nishikori's biggest win since he beat Novak Djokovic two years ago.
