The head of the Australian Rugby Union has warned the top players they will have to accept smaller contracts to play for the Wallabies because of the game's worrying financial situation.

Bill Pulver has also revealed the loss of almost $19 million over the past two years won't be offset as much as they'd hoped by the British and Irish Lions tour starting next month, because of a difficult sponsorship market.

He added that Australian rugby has to do more than reduce players salaries if it's to get back into good financial shape.
