The Black Caps had started the final day on 158 for 6 and were bowled out for 220 just after 3pm local time, with Tim Southee making 38 and Doug Bracewell 19.
Captain Brendan McCullum, who managed to score just 31 runs in the series, says the gulf between the teams was exposed in this Test match, England are formidable at home.
The two sides now play three one-day internationals with the first at Lord's on Friday.
