The New Zealand tennis number one Marina Erakovic has been knocked out of the singles at the French Open after losing to the 17th seed Sloane Stephens of America in the third round.

The 25 year old Aucklander lost the first set 4-6 and then won the second in a tie break 7-5 before going down in the third 3-6.

Stephens, who next faces the defending champion Maria Sharapova, says the match could have gone either way as Erakovic was playing well.

Erakovic says she's dissapointed not to progress to the 4th round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

The Aucklander was back on court soon after the defeat teaming up with her doubles partner Cara Black of Zimbabwe.

The pair won their first round match in straight sets beating the Germans Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic.
