Rafael Nadal has become the first male to win the same grand slam title eight times with another victory at the French Open.
The 27-year-old claimed his 12th major title with a 6-3 6-2 6-3 win over fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, who was playing in his first grand slam final at the age of 31, and hadn't dropped a set in the tournament until the match.
Nadal has won seven titles since his return to the ATP tour in February after a seven-month injury break.
There was an anxious moment during the match when a protester leapt from the stands carrying a flare and protesting France's controversial same sex marriage law. A total of four young people, protesting about the same issue, were ejected from Roland Garros during the final.
