9:13 am on 23 June 2013

The British and Irish Lions have opened their Test series against Australia with a 23-21 victory last night in Brisbane.

The Lions' Welsh wingers George North and Alex Cuthbert scored for the tourists, but

the Wallabies' winger Israel Folau scored two of his own on debut and was named man of the match.

Folau crossed for his first in just the 13th minute after Will Genia sparked a superb 80 metre counter-attack by taking a quick tap before grubber kicking to the former league international.

North levelled terms with Folau with a sensational 60 metre try before Folau stepped Jonny Sexton and Alex Corbisiero to score his second try before halftime - a movement again sparked by Genia.

The Wallabies' lost four backs to injury.

Berrick Barnes (Jaw) Christian Lealiifano (concussion), Pat McCabe (neck), Adam Ashley-Cooper (shoulder) and winger Digby Ioane (shoulder-elbow).

Replacement full back Kurtley Beale missed two penalty goal attempts in the last ten minutes, which could have won Australia the game.

AUSTRALIA 21 (Israel Folau 2 tries James O'Connor con Kurtley Beale 2, O'Connor pens)
