The Melbourne rugby league player Gareth Widdop faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines after suffering a dislocated hip in last night's NRL loss to Gold Coast.

The England international cried out in agony and punched the turf after suffering the injury in the second half of his team's 18-12 loss at the Titans.

Widdop was tackled by Titans duo Ryan James and Albert Kelly and instantly clutched at his leg after his knee appeared to catch in the turf as he went to ground.

The 24-year-old was stretchered off the field and taken by ambulance to the nearby Robina Hospital.

Melbourne stay second in the standings, while Gold Coast are up to 5th.
