World and European champions Spain are into the Confederations Cup final after a penalty shootout victory over Italy in their semi-final in Brazil.

The two sides were locked at 0-0 after extra time and Spain won the shoot-out 7-6 with Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci the only player to miss from the spot.

The victory extended Spain's record unbeaten run in competitive matches to 29 and set up the final which almost all neutrals wanted against hosts Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

Italy, who were the better team for periods against the World Cup holders, will face Uruguay in the third place playoff match in Salvador on the same day.
