The New Zealand Rugby League has confirmed the appointment of a new President following its Annual General Meeting at Rugby League House in Auckland.

Howie Tamati MBE was welcomed into the role by the NZRL Chairman Scott Carter.

Carter says Tamati is a natural statesman of the game who has a very strong record as Kiwi captain, player, coach and selector.

Tamati is currently the CEO of Sport Taranaki and is also a Councillor with the New Plymouth District Council.

Until last year he was the chairman of the New Zealand Maori Rugby League.

Tamati's duties in the role will include assisting the NZRL in the delivery of its strategic initiatives, representing the organisation at official functions and Chairing the Annual General Meeting.

Tamati takes over the Presidency from retired Judge and former NZRL Chairman Trevor Maxwell, who has completed six years in the role.
