Tottenham beat Wigan in FA Cup

11:24 am on 3 January 2009

Two goals from Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko helped Tottenham reach the 4th round of the FA Cup as they beat fellow English Premiership side Wigan 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

Pavlyuchenko scored in the 52nd and 76th minutes with Croatian star Luka Modric getting the other to send the eight-time FA Cup winners through.

The win gave Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, who coached Portsmouth to FA Cup glory last season, the perfect build-up to Tuesday's League Cup semi-final first leg clash against Burnley.

Wigan, flying high in seventh place in the Premier League, were without leading strikers Emile Heskey and top scorer Amir Zaki as well as goalkeeper Chris Kirkland through injury.

Most of the other matches are tomorrow, including Chelsea against Southend, Arsenal against Plymouth Argyle, Everton against Macclesfield Town, and Liverpool against Preston North End, while on Monday Manchester United play Southampton.
