12:31 pm on 7 January 2009

The leading Australian sprinter Turffontein has confirmed his trip to Trentham for the $1 million Group One First Sovereign Trust Telegraph Handicap with an impressive win in a barrier trial at Cranbourne.

Trainer Anthony Cummings says race jockey Glen Boss is confirmed as the rider in the 1200 metre race on January 17.

Turffontein, racing in New Zealand as Lord Turffontein, is the second favourite at $5.50 behind Mufhasa at $4.50 and is Australia's only representative after Takeover Target and Captain Bax withdrew.

The Wellington Racing Club's chief executive David Jewell says while it's disappointing Takeover Target is not making the trip,Turffontein is a very smart sprinter, with three Group One placings in Australia.
