Auckland cricket captain suspended for abusing umpire

The captain of the Auckland women's cricket team has been suspended for three playing days for abusing an umpire.

Paula Gruber swore at the umpire in her side's match against Canterbury in Christchurch last week after an Auckland player was given out.

Gruber, who was sitting on the boundary, was heard to loudly direct a comment to the umpire, swearing and disputing the decision.

The disciplinary hearing commissioner Lee Robinson says the three-day suspension was lower than the possible five days, taking into account the player's unreserved apology and fact that the incident was a momentary outburst.
